Our director Pragna Patel received an honorary doctorate from Keele University for her ‘outstanding contribution to women’s rights, social justice and secularism’.
Pragna thanked the University for the honour. In her acceptance speech, she said:
“…No one achieves anything on their own…the history of SBS is a history of collective vision, endeavour and achievement. I accept this award on behalf of SBS and the countless women with whom I have had the privilege to work over the last four decades…I am fortunate to work with women whose everyday battles for freedom and justice and rights continue to inspire me…to construct a politics of dissent and hope. Dissent is necessary to speak truth to power, and hope is necessary to counter the dominant and pessimistic ideologies of hate and violence that are raging all around us. Together, dissent and hope form the bedrock of a more progressive politics of solidarity based on the principle that an injustice to one is an injustice to all”.
I accept this award on behalf of @SBSisters and the women I have worked with over the last decade.
I thank the many colleagues and friends who have travelled with me on this journey, and who seek to make a difference in this world. pic.twitter.com/C1RWhK8O4x
