We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of Jennie Buckman on 4th January 2019, founder of GIANTS Theatre and acclaimed playwright with whom we had the privilege of collaborating on a piece of street theatre on domestic violence in 2016.
The play,Unspoken, was performed on the pavement outside Southall Town Hall by the women who use our services. It takes a lot of courage for women to enact their personal stories of violence in the heart of the community. It would never have come to fruition without Jennie’s boundless energy and enthusiasm which spurred the women to speak out. In the process of researching her own play on domestic violence, Piece of Silk,Jennie made sure, in her uniquely generous and collaborative style of working, that it was a two-way process.
Jennie Buckman was passionately committed to giving voice to the experiences of marginalised communities. GIANTS worked with the traumatised families of ordinary soldiers, with BAME women from the 3rdAge University and travellers.
